Has anyone offered any particularly good reasons as to why Meta needs to get into AI?
Google has to be there
Amazon has a lot to gain selling AI'AAS
For MS, there is a defense and offense to play.
Meta is a media owner, they make money from ads, against content people upload for free. Unless you're try really really hard to see it, there's NO threat, and Zero opportunity, unless they're just bored of everything they exist for.
They have a decent dataset to train models on, and they can own personalized ad targeting and offering of 'agentic commerce,' particularly for WhatsApp in emerging markets. But also, maybe bigger is the Zuck believes AI is the next massive platform shift, and if he doesn't have an iron in the fire, he'll be missing out big time, and he doesn't run his company just to generate cash for his investors.
I thought it was more on Ad Generation. A while ago, I invested in this company (https://genus.ai/) that uses generative AI to make personalized ads at scale, and the worry was always that Meta (and Shopify) would just do this themselves. The agentic commerce point is that you'd go to WhatsApp and ask it to book you a flight or a hotel.
Maybe, but you want to use AI to make ads, you could do it easily enough spending 10,000 times less than they are. The technology has been around for about 15 years, and AI has turbo charged the same principles
Theres also ample evidence personalized ads don't work better, ads work by shared connections, scale, confidence. Personalized ads feel small.
"Founder" is the most detrimental term to the VC industry, someone should invent codewords ~ too many on the X timeline are obsessed with acquiring it which leads to a weird call for startups loop

I don't get the AI as a platform shift thing.
Is this a suggestion AI consumes the content and makes decisions?
or that we consume AI content ( unlikely, but we would on the same platforms)
or AI will be a new media ( Character.ai ), not likely.
AI isn't a device, a media, a context, it's a profound background.
They have amazing, data and thus CAN do this, but thats not reason.
Meta already have the best ad targeting ever known, there is nobody to compete with .

lots of performances out there for sure!
